Ames had supplied saber bayonets for Sharps M1853 and M1855 military rifles and continued to do so for early M1859s as well, with Collins also supplying them in 1861 and 1862. Bayonets made by the two differ in several ways, the most obvious being the longer blade on the Ames, 22 inches, and its more pronounced curve. This is good example of the Ames version and bears the serial number 40914 to match it with its rifle. The spring and locking ring are present and functional. The hilt has mellow patina and some scattered handling marks and small dings, but the serial number is very clear. The blade has a clear Ames Manufacturing Company mark on the reverse ricasso, sharp on the upper two lines and rubbed below. The blade rates good, with bright metal mixed with gray and brown spots.
This would add to a Sharps display, bayonet or edged weapons collection and, needless to say, if you own Sharps NM1859 #40914, you should be dialing the phone now. [sr] [ph:L]
