This identified Civil War image is that of Samuel Bates, a native of East Bridgewater, Mass. and an infantry officer in Company K, 3rd Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The young infantry officer presents a ¾ length, seated view and gazes at an angle at the camera with a resolute expression on his face. Image is sharp and clear. He wears his regulation, nine-button frock coat that features the shoulder straps of a Captain. In the image, Bates rests both hands on his lap and cradles his officer’s slouch hat in his left hand. Clearly visible on the hat crown is the numeral “3”. Bates also wears light colored trousers with the single thin blue bead down the leg. CDV, enclosed in a clear acrylic frame, is identified on the back in handwritten pencil with “Capt. Samuel Bates / Co K”. CDV boasts a Washington DC backmark. The CDV is in very fine condition and comes with a cursory amount of soldier data. A very nice CDV of an identified, MA infantry officer.
