Presented is an excellent Civil War image of Union Major General Horatio Gouverneur Wright in his full military uniform. In this CDV image, the seated Horatio Wright presents a ¾ size view and looks eager and fit he sits at a small side table in a Washington DC studio. The General gazes away from the camera and looks ready to take the field. The chubby-cheeked officer is hatless, wears his hair over his ears and sports a modest chin beard. He wears the uniform of a Union Major General with a dark frock coat, dark trousers, black velvet collar and sleeve cuffs. On his coat, his shoulder straps exhibit the twin stars of his officer rank, as does the double-breasted row of eighteen brass buttons, in three sections of three in column. His right arm rests on the edge of an upholstered thigh-armed chair with long tassels handing from it. His left hand rests upon his left thigh while his long coat skirts drape over his knees.
The CDV image measures 4” long x 2¼” wide and is backmarked “JOHN GOLDIN & CO. / photographers / Vignette Specialte / WASHINGTON, DC”. Image is strong, very clear, and shows sharp detail. Outer perimeter edges of the CDV are tooled with thin strips of gold paint. Both upper corners on the CDV have been clipped to fit into an album. The bottom area of the card has “GENERAL WRIGHT” hand-penciled on it. Card surfaces are clean and scuff free with no bends, cracks or tears. Does show very slight soiling spots at the right side of head but does not detract. Backside of the CDV bears a period signature “Gen. Wright / 6th Corps”.
An excellent image of a most successful, battle wise but unassuming Union general, Horatio G. Wright. [ra][ph:L]
