This bust view image features an image of a young man wearing a light gray uniform with dark trim, epaulettes, and a cap with a pompom.

Overall, this image is in good condition. Minor surface dirt is present but there are no detracting marks to note. The tip of the upper right-hand corner is bent but is still intact.

The reverse of this image shows an old ink inscription: “Henry C. Granger / Co. “B: 11th Mass Volls/ Killed at Williamsburg Va / May 5” 1862 / aged 22d years.”

The 11th Massachusetts had an interesting uniform given them by the state of Massachusetts. The unit’s regimental history reads: “We were dressed in our new gray uniforms which had been sent us by the State committee, and which we were forced to pay for, despite our protests. The delusive color cost us dearly, for, at the first battle of Bull Run, one of our own regiments opened fire upon us, mistaking us for Confederates, and several valuable lives were sacrificed.”

Henry C. Granger was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 19, 1839. He was only 22 when he was killed in battle at Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 5th 1862. His father, born in 1817, was 1st Lieutenant Henry H. Granger, who served with the 10th Mass. battery; he was killed in 1864 from wounds received at Hatcher’s Run.

Little is known about Granger as his service records were not available online and little information could be gleaned from what was available.  A great research project for a great image of a soldier in a rarely seen state issued uniform.  [cla][ph:L]
