Flavel Sheldon was a 30 year old farmer when he enlisted as a Sergeant in August of 1862 and mustered into Company D of the 37th Massachusetts Infantry on September 2nd. By June of ’64, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and in March of ’65, 1st Lieutenant. On April 2nd, 1865, he was wounded in action at Petersburg, VA during the final US assault and breakthrough. He was not discharged for disability until June 17, 1865. After the war, Sheldon was an active member of GAR Post #86 (Baker Post) in Northampton, Massachusetts until his death in 1909.
The photo and mounting card are in good condition, with slight wear to the upper right edge as shown. In his bust portrait, he is wearing a single-breasted frock with a pin and Lieutenant shoulder boards. The card has no decorative border or writing on the front. The reverse is clean and shows a singular crease at bottom left. Written in pencil is “Lieut. Flavel Sheldon” and the photographer stamping reads “JOHNSON’S Union Gallery, 520 Pa. Av., bet. 2d and 3d Sts. Washington, D. C.”. Text at the bottom edge reads “Copies of this picture can be had at any time.” Overall measurements are 2.4” x 3.9”.
