Barnabas enlisted in Lawrence, Kansas as a 1st Sergeant in Company C of the 9th Kansas Cavalry.  According to records, he was severely wounded in the right arm on the second day of the battle of Cabin Creek, in what was then “Indian Territory” (present day Oklahoma).  The battle holds the distinction of being the first engagement that saw white and African American troops fighting side by side in US service. He was discharged at Leavenworth in 1864 for said wound and subsequent amputation.

Shown here in smart civilian clothing, the right arm of Barney’s frock is conspicuously empty, and his left hand grasps the falling collar of his coat.  Under his outer layer, he is wearing matching checked pattern vest and trousers. No writing is present on the front of the card, and a slight water stain is noted at upper right.  Two very small stains are noted on the bottom edge of the card with some minor corner wear. The reverse is quite unique, featuring two stamps dated 1864, the photographer stamp “ADAMS, Lawrence Kansas” and a penciled “Barney Palmer” in cursive.  It is mostly clean with typical slight darkening at the bottom edge and a light water stain in the upper left.  This photo was almost certainly taken shortly after he was discharged for wounds upon his return to his home city.  Overall measurements are 2.45” x 4”.

A rare, wartime CDV of a wounded veteran who fought alongside African American US troops for the first time in open combat – sure to be a highlight of any collection.  [cm][ph:L]
