At 27 years old, Thomas enlisted on 8/9/1862 at New York City, NY as a Private. On that same day, he mustered into "A" Company of the New York 1st Engineers. He was promoted four times during the Civil War, first to Artificer on 5/1/1863, 2nd Lieut. on 3/15/1864 (of Co. D), 1st Lieut. on 1/31/1865, and Captain on 3/14/1865 (of Co. M). He was Mustered Out on 6/30/1865 at Richmond. The impressive battle honors of the 1st NY Engineers include Battle of Fort Pulaski, Battle of James Island, First Battle of Fort Wagner, Second Battle of Fort Wagner, Second Battle of Charleston Harbor, Second Battle of Fort Sumter, Battle of Olustee, Bermuda Hundred Campaign, Siege of Petersburg, Dutch Gap, Battle of Chaffin's Farm, and the Battle of Honey Hill. His Widow (Cornelia E Archer) applied for a pension on 4/21/1902 from the state of New Jersey.
The photo and mounting card are in good condition, with minimal edge and corner wear. A double lined gold border traces the edge of the card and surrounds a bust portrait of Archer. He is wearing a single-breasted frock with Lieutenant shoulder boards. A pre-war photo accompanies his official records and, when compared to this image, the toll of war and campaigning is evident. No staining or marks are evident. The reverse is clean, with minor curling of the outer paper layer at the upper right and left corners of the card. “Lieut. Archer school-teacher” is written in pencil on the back, and the photographer logo stamping reads “G.T. LAPE PHOTOGRAPHER 146 CHATHAM ST. N.Y.”. Overall measurements are 2.4” x 4”.
In proportion to infantry, engineers comprised a small contingent of US forces. This is a great opportunity to collect an image of a volunteer engineer officer who saw service all along the East Coast. [cm][ph:L]
