William Wirt Allen (September 11, 1835 – November 21, 1894) was a Confederate military officer during the American Civil War. He rose through the ranks to command a division in the Cavalry Corps of the Army of Tennessee in the last days of the war in 1865.
Allen enlisted in the Montgomery Mounted Rifles at the beginning of the war and by early 1862, he was Major of the 1st Alabama Cavalry. He saw action at Shiloh, promoted to colonel and led the 1st Alabama Cavalry at the Battle of Perryville, where he received a slight wound. Later that year, he was severely wounded in the Battle of Murfreesboro. He was out of action for over a year while recuperating from surgery which left him little use of his right hand, and finally returned to field duty in early 1864. He was promoted to brigadier general and took command of a brigade consisting of the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 12th, and 51st Alabama Cavalry regiments, serving with Joseph Wheeler in the Army of Tennessee. During the Atlanta Campaign Allen commanded a division.
This is an oval clipped image of Allen in Confederate uniform. The image itself measures approximately 2” x 2.4” and clearly shows him in double-breasted uniform coat with Confederate general’s collar insignia. There are a few very fine horizontal creases in the image which have no visual effect. This photograph has been remounted on a perfectly clean cdv mount. There is no back mark. [jet][ph:L]
