This CDV features a three-quarter length standing view of first sergeant Stratton wearing a sack coat with both sleeves pinned up and a badge pinned to the front and some linens in his breast pocket. “147” is easily seen in his infantry insignia on his cap.

This image is adhered to a pre-printed mount which reads: “Alfred A. Stratton / Co. G., 147th N.Y.V. Wounded at Petersburg, Va.”

The reverse of this image is blank with no photographer’s backmark, although there is a pencil notation from a previous collector.

Overall, the condition of this image is good. There are no chips, cracks, or bends to note. The photograph is beginning to lift just a bit on the bottom left-hand corner. There is a bit of foxing on the front of the image. The reverse is fairly clean with only minor surface dirt.

Alfred Stratton, Company G, 147th New York. Stratton is one of the more famous amputees to be photographed during the war. He, along with George Warner of the 20th Connecticut who lost both arms to friendly fire at Gettysburg, was a popular subject of public sympathy and was often photographed.

Alfred Stratton was born in New York in 1845. He was a 17-year-old blacksmith living in Ellicott when he was hired as a substitute by a man named August Lass.  Stratton enlisted as a Private in Company G, 147th New York on August 19, 1863. At some unspecified date Stratton was promoted to Sergeant. During the initial attacks on Petersburg, Stratton was wounded by a cannonball and had to have both arms amputated. He was discharged for wounds on September 27, 1864.

After the war he returned to New York where he married in 1865. He worked as a minister and later moved to Washington, D.C. He died there on June 13, 1874, and was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington.  [cla][ph:L]
