This CDV shows Seth Kinman seated as he holds his rifle. He wears pioneer clothing made of animal skins. A large bowie knife hangs from his waistbelt. Kinman is most known for his “pioneer spirit.” Born in Union County, Pennsylvania in 1815, he headed west and eventually settled in Humboldt County, California. He was a hunter of big game, such as bears, elk, and moose. All of which he used to fashion some of the most ostentatious and impractical furniture of the day. He enjoyed gifting his creations to our nation’s presidents. Most notably, Kinman gave President Lincoln an elkhorn chair in 1864. Kinman was also an entertainer. He peddled his chairs and oddities, such as stuffed bears, fiddles, and scalps of Natives he encountered, across the nation, including CDVs such as the one offered here. Kinman made a living of telling less-than-factual stories regarding his travels. What is verifiable though is his horrific treatment of Native tribes from the Black Hawk war through his death in California in 1888.
This CDV has a commercially printed description on the mount which reads: “Seth Kinman / Calfornia Hunter and Trapper, who presented President Lincoln with the Elk Horn Chair.” Below that is Kinman’s copyright dated 1864. The mount bears a Brady, Washington photographer’s mark.
The reverse of the image shows a Brady backmark.
Overall, the image is clean and clear with no major detracting marks to note to the image. There is one minor tear of the card mount at the bottom edge. The reverse is also clean with a couple minor spots of foxing. The upper lefthand corner shows a tiny push to the mount but it is in stable condition. The tear mentioned on the bottom from border is also seen on the reverse. [cla] [ph:L]
