CDV is of Dwight Divine in a dark frock coat with shoulder straps.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount and paper are also in nice condition.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for BOGARDUS… NEW YORK. There is also a 2 cent tax stamp that is canceled with “BOGARDUS PHOTO… 1865.” Top of reverse has a very nice period ink signature that reads “YOURS TRULY, D. DIVINE, LIEUT. 143RD N.Y.V.”

Dwight Divine was born on March 18, 1841 in Divine Corners, New York. He attended common school and was later a graduate of Monticello Academy.

Divine was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant of Company C, 143rd New York Infantry on August 23, 1862. He was made 1st lieutenant in Company F on April 17, 1863 and captain (but not mustered) on July 24, 1865. There is some information Divine was promoted captain on the field of Bentonville and was later made major by brevet, but the records consulted do not confirm this. He mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 20, 1865.

While with the 143rd the regiment was engaged at Suffolk, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, relief of Knoxville, served throughout the Atlanta Campaign, Averysboro and Bentonville.

After the war Divine was a merchant and owner of the former Ulster Knife Company, Ellenville, NY, which he renamed Dwight Divine & Sons. He was also president of Ellenville Savings Bank and Ellenville Water Works. He was also Post Commander of the Ward Post #191 of the GAR.

Divine died in Ellenville, New York on September 26, 1933 and is buried there in Fantinekill Cemetery.  [ad][ph:L]
