Image is a chest up view of Benjamin Reynolds in a dark military coat and vest. Pinned to his chest is a large dark colored rosette and just below it and off to one side, is another badge of some kind.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount has a cut frame at center with an embossed scroll decoration. The paper of the image is glued to the back of the mount so the subject’s face shows at center of the frame.
Reverse has a faint period ink inscription of “BENJ. REYNOLDS, CAPT. 143RD N.Y.V., MONTICELLO, N.Y.”
Benjamin Reynolds was born in Neversink, New York on June 4, 1840. He was 22 years old when he was commissioned a captain in Company G, 143rd New York Infantry on August 8, 1862. It is known that he was captured but the place and date is not known. He was paroled on March 15, 1865 and was discharged May 5, 1865.
After the war he lived in Parksville, New York where he died on June 25, 1903. He is buried there in Parksville Methodist Church Cemetery. [ad][ph:L]
