CDV is a nice clear bust view of Caleb H. North in the uniform of a captain.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Mount and paper have minor surface dirt. Bottom of the image has a nice ink signature of “YOURS TRULY, C. H. NORTH.”
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for TOLLES & SEELY… ITHACA, N.Y.
Caleb Howell North was born in Lansing, New York on March 5, 1829. He was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in Company D, 143rd New York Infantry on October 8, 1862 and was promoted captain of Company K on October 17, 1863. He was discharged for disability on July 15, 1864.
North moved to Emporia, Kansas in 1871 and entered the drug business with one L. Shellmeyer and later was a traveling drug salesman. He was very civic minded according to his obituary, doing all he could to help improve Emporia and was a member of the Knights of Honor, a philanthropic organization.
He died of “inflammation of the bowels” in Emporia, Kansas on January 30, 1881 and is buried in Old Pine Grove Cemetery in Lansing, New York. [ad][ph:L]
