This CDV features a front & center view of the bullet-ridden flag of the 44th New York. This view shows the flag on a staff hanging just so as to create some movement near the center of the flag. The remainder of the flagstaff, which appears to be detached (likely it was two-piece), stands straight up on the right-hand side of the flag. Holes can be seen throughout; some large (in the blue field) and some small (riddled in the stripes), with some shattering of the silk happening as well. The flag shows loss to the edges as well. “44th Reg’t. N.Y” appears below the flag.
The image is in good condition with some minor surface dirt. The contrast of the image is a bit bright in the bottom left-hand corner but is clear overall. Some foxing is present on the image and card mount in the upper right corner. The reverse of the image shows Brady’s backmark. The mount shows some darkening, most prominently at the edges.
“Ellsworth’s Avengers” began the war in October 1861 and served out their term until its expiration in October 1864. The regiment saw action at many of the Army of the Potomac’s most intense battles such as the Siege of Yorktown, Gaines’ Mill, Antietam, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Petersburg.
The 44th New York had two national colors. The first was received in October 1861 and was a gift from the wife of Erastus Corning, Hariett Weld Corning. The flag was in deplorable condition, so Mrs. Corning got her needles out once again and made a new hand-stitched flag with embroidered stars. This one was presented in January 1863 to the regiment by General Charles Griffin, commander of the 1st Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac, in her stead. Although it has been said that Griffin presented the new flag in exchange for the original one, it is not known where the first flag ended up. The second flag is in the collection of the New York Military Museum. [CLA][ph:L]
