Samuel Rhoads Franklin (August 24, 1825 – February 24, 1909), born in York, PA, was a rear admiral in the United States Navy. He participated in the important Battle of Hampton Roads off the coast of Virginia in 1862, served as the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., from 1884 to 1885, and was president of the International Marine Conference of 1889.
Rhodes was appointed a Midshipman on 2/18/41 and promoted to Passed Midshipman on 8/10/47; to Master, 4/18/55, Lieut., 9/5/55; Lt. Commander, 9/26/66; Captain 8/13/72; Commodore, 12/15/80; and Rear Admiral on 1/25/88. He retired from active duty in 1887. Most of his 46 years of service were spent at sea. He was active in most of the important operations during the Mexican and Civil Wars. He was the author of “Memoirs of a Rear Admiral.” He died in 1909 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
