Waist up CDV view of Williams. He must have been cold as he wears a military vest, a frock coat, and a heavy overcoat. Image is pasted to an interesting mount with wide, purple edge. Corners are trimmed. Embossed on lower edge with photographer’s information, “Webster & Bro. / Louisville.”
Written in period ink on back is “Col. E.C. Williams / 9th Penna. Cav.”
Williams enlisted on 4/19/1861 as a Brigadier General of US Volunteers General Staff. On 11/21/1861, he was commissioned as Colonel of 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He resigned on 10/9/1862. Williams was a famous soldier in central Pennsylvania, a bookbinder from Harrisburg who had been a hero in the Mexican–American War. He died in 1900 and is buried in St. Johns Church Cemetery, Port Trevorton, Pennsylvania. [jet][ph:L]
