This cdv photograph is a studio view of John Sedgewick in General’s uniform. Shoulder-up profile view. He is wearing a double-breasted frock with Brigadier General’s (one-star) shoulder straps. Clarity and contrast are decent. The plain mount is in good, untrimmed condition. A pencil ID is along the bottom edge on the front.

R.W. Addis, Washington, DC b/m.

John Sedgwick (September 13, 1813 – May 9, 1864) was a military officer and Union Army general during the Civil War. He was wounded three times at the Battle of Antietam. He was not present at Fredericksburg, but had returned in time for 2nd Fredericksburg and Salem Church. He was at Gettysburg but his Corps was only lightly engaged. Sedgwick was killed by a sharpshooter at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 9, 1864. He is remembered for an ironic remark among his last words: "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."    [jet][ph:L]
