Featured here is a CDV of three dapper soldiers of the 12th Illinois cavalry. Two men seated with legs crossed and hands resting in their laps; the standing man rests his hands on his pards shoulders. Each man wears a jaunty slouch hat. The seated men wear shell jackets; the man on the left wears corporal’s chevrons while the man seated on the right shows no rank insignia. The standing man wears a civilian jacket—given away by his notched lapel.

The reverse of the CDV has a three-cent cancelled tax stamp above the backmark which reads: “Y Day / Photographer, / No. 338 Main Street / Memphis, Tenn.” In period ink, the three men in the photo are identified: “Yours respt / H.E. Dulebon / A.D. Lytle / J.R. Hicok / Mt. Carroll / Carroll Co. Ill.”

Civil War Data features this photo and has the ID of each man as Dulebon seated right, Lytle seated left, and Hicok standing.

The condition of the image is fair. There is surface dirt throughout and some dark staining on the top right corner. A faint red streak obscures Hicok’s eye. There is a small raised bubble toward the bottom right corner. The image is quite sharp, making it a bit difficult to easily make out the details in the image. However, the content of the image is so cool we can easily overlook the lack of clarity. There is some separation of the mount at the top, most noticeable on the reverse where some chipping is occurring. The tax-stamp has lifted some but still remains affixed. Minor staining and surface dirt throughout.

Hiram Elliott Dulebon (seated right) is somewhat of a mysterious figure. Few records were available regarding his military service, and what those records did show left some questions. Dulebon served first in the 15th Illinois Infantry before he enlisted as a private in the 12th Illinois Cavalry in December of 1863. Civil War Data shows that he deserted in 1865. No muster out records could be located online. Dulebon was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania about 1843. Eventually, he made his way to Illinois. Dulebon lived in several places, eventually settling in Oregon. No death record could be located.

Arthur D. Lytle (seated left) mustered into the 12th IL Cavalry in December of 1863. He mustered in as a corporal in company F and ended the war as a hospital steward. Little could be found on Lytle. However, it appears that spent time in Nebraska post-war.

Joel R. Hicok (standing) was born in New York state in 1838. He enlisted as a corporal and was a sergeant when he mustered out at the end of May in 1866. Hicok married Lydia Gardener on December 22nd 1868. They had three children: Cora, Franklin, & Hattie. Hicok and his family built their life together in Janesville, Iowa. He died in late July 1892.

Few military service records were available for these three men. They each warrant more research. [cla][ph:L]
