Very nice waist-up view of Haggerty wearing a dark frock coat open from the midriff up. His frock coat is single-breasted with captain’s shoulder straps and three-piece eagle staff buttons.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Paper and mount are also in nice shape. Bottom center of the mount has an ID in period pencil “CAPT. HAGGERTY A.D.C.”

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for E. JACOBS… NEW ORLEANS.

Peter Haggerty was born in Ireland on February 7, 1830. He came to this country when he was 5 years old. By the time he reached adulthood he was a successful lawyer and land holder in Massachusetts.

He was offered a position on the staff of General Benjimin Butler and was appointed captain and aide-de-camp on October 6, 1861 and was promoted to major on November 9, 1863. He resigned on November 20, 1864.

According to Haggerty’s obituary, after his return to Massachusetts he began drinking and lost all his property. He then went to New Orleans to try his hand at business but failed. He took a job in the New Orleans Customshouse but lost the job partially due to his taking morphine which he said was prescribed by his doctor. His wife and family returned north and left Haggerty in New Orleans promising to return to the law and regain all he had lost. Sadly, it was not to be. Haggerty was found dead in his room on July 8, 1866 having died from a stroke. His friends buried him in New Orleans but his body was later returned to Massachusetts where it was buried in Lowell’s St. Patrick Cemetery.

General Butler said of Haggerty “Major Haggerty, who was, for a young man, a very good lawyer.” And “Major Haggerty, served with me until I was relieved at New Orleans. I have had occasion to speak of him before, and now have only to add that he was a very able man, and good soldier, sometimes serving as judge advocate general.”     [ad][ph:L]
