CDV is attributed to be Marcellus Frank of the 39th Illinois Infantry and 15th Illinois Cavalry. He is posed seated by a table wearing a dark civilian suit with a large black bowtie and boots.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Paper has light foxing.
Reverse has a period pencil inscription that reads “EVA’S ??? + SED??? – DEAR UNCLE MARCELLUS FRANK, OUR MOTHER WARNER’S TWIN BROTHER. HE WAS INJURED IN THE CIVIL WAR. DIED IN LIBBY PRISON. WAS CAPTURED BY THE CONFEDERATES.”
Marcellus P. Frank’s pension card lists him as being a member of Company K, 39th Illinois Infantry but no other records of service in this unit could be found.
Records do show that he enlisted as a private in Company L, 15th Illinois Cavalry on December 17, 1863 and died at Helena, Arkansas on July 7, 1864. [ad][ph:L]
