William H. French, USMA 1837, posted to 1st U.S Artillery and received two brevets for service in the Mexican War. Promoted to Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Sept. 28, 1861. Commanded 3rd Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac at Antietam that included the 6th MD. Later he was assigned to the MD Brigade as well. He was promoted to Maj Gen Volunteers Nov. 29, 1862. After Gettysburg he commanded the 2nd Corps until after Mine Run Campaign, mustered out of service May 6, 1864 with rank of Col. 4th U.S Artillery. He died May 5, 1881 and buried at Rock Cemetery, Washington D.C.
Paper and mount are in good condition, with some foxing around the outer edges on the front. Contrast is good.
On reverse, “BRADY’S ALBUM GALLERY/ NO. 394/ CAMP OF 66TH N.Y.V. (FRENCH’S BRIGADE)/ AT ST. PETER’S CHURCH, YORKTOWN.” In pencil reads “JUNE – EARLY MORNING LIGHTING FIRES.” Tape residue is evident on the back corners of the mounted paper. [mc][ph:L]
