CDV shows Ogilvie seated at a table in the classic Napoleonic pose with one hand tucked in his coat.
He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with the shoulder straps of a Master. He also wears a dark vest, white shirt and dark bowtie. In addition to his shoulder straps, his rank is also visible on his cuffs.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Mount and paper have light scattered surface dirt from age. Bottom of the mount is marked COURRET HERMANOS, CALLE MERCADERES 197, LIMA.
Reverse has a similar imprint as above but with a period ink ID at top that reads “YOURS FRATERNALLY JAMES OGILVIE, USN.”
James Ogilvie was appointed acting master in the US Navy on August 26, 1861. He served aboard the USS SHEPHERD KNAPP, USS POWHATAN, USS PASSAIC, USS TALLAPOOSA and commanded the USS JOHN GRIFFITH. He was discharged on June 6, 1868. [ad] [ph:L]
