CDV shows Kirkland posed leaning on his walking stick in front of a painted backdrop of a pastoral scene with a full balustrade behind him. He wears a dark forage cap with braid around the base and up the sides, a light-colored double-breasted frock coat with the three horizontal bars of a captain on his collar and matching light-colored trousers. He also sports a cool looking goatee.
Contrast and clarity are good. Paper has two faint lines that look to be imperfections on the negative. One line passes through the subject’s face about eye level and the other is near the shoulder. Neither one really detracts from the image. Mount has light surface dirt on the edges and bottom has a period pencil ID of “WM. KIRKLAND.”
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for QUINBY & CO…CHARLESTON, S.C. along with a canceled 2 cent tax stamp. Top of reverse has “WILLIAM KIRKLAND” in flowing blue ink that looks period but may be later.
There is some confusion as to the ID. There were 10 William Kirkland’s from South Carolina. The former owner has the image identified as William L. Kirkland of the 4th South Carolina Cavalry who was wounded at Hawes Shop on May 28, 1864 and died the same day. This ID is based on a photo that appears on page 105 of “PHOTO HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA” by the University of Arkansas published in 1994. Problem is this fellow never held a rank higher than private and the subject in the photo is a captain.
The only William Kirkland who did hold the rank of captain was William W. Kirkland of the 15th South Carolina Infantry. He enlisted as 1st sergeant of Company E, 15th South Carolina Infantry on September 6, 1861. He received a commission to 1st lieutenant on January 19, 1864 and then captain at an undisclosed date in 1864 or 65.
The 15th South Carolina saw action at South Mountain, Gettysburg and in Grant’s Overland Campaign of 1864-65. [ad][ph:L]
