This image is a Civil War period CDV copy of a tintype. The original tintype included two soldiers and this CDV copy was made to focus on just one of the two.
Image shows Willis F. Ward of Company C, 4th New York Heavy Artillery. He is posed seated next to a comrade who is partially visible. He wears a light overcoat open to reveal a partially buttoned dark sack coat with light trousers. Also visible in the image is the decorative brass mat and frame from the tintype. Written faintly in period ink above the subjects head is “WILLIS WARD.” Image is clear and clean with good contrast.
Reverse of the image is blank but has an early 20th Century ink ID that reads “WALLACE WARD, SON OF RHADA BUTLER WARD.”
CDV is attached to a modern piece of paper with Ward’s record printed across the bottom. Paper is cut on back so inscription on reverse can be read.
Willis F. Ward was born in Geneseo County, New York about 1844. He was 19 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 4th New York Heavy Artillery on December 14, 1864. At the time he was described as being 5’ 7” tall with blue eyes, light hair and light complexion.
About the time of Ward’s enlistment the 4th New York Heavy Artillery left the defenses of Washington and was assigned to the Army of the Potomac as infantry. The regiment saw action at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.
Ward was mustered out on September 26, 1865. [AD][ph:L]
