Here we have a pair of CDVs of the pugnacious senator from Illinois, Stephen A. Douglas. Image features a waist-up view of the “Little Giant” wearing a silk cravat. The mount is plain with no background and its corners have been clipped. The reverse of the image bears a plainly printed “Published by / E. Anthony, / 501 Broadway, N.Y.” There is a pencil inscription reading “S.A. Douglas.”
The second image is a bust-view etching of Mrs. Adele Douglas. The card mount features a simple double lined frame. All four corners have been clipped. The reverse of the image bears the E.H.&T. Anthony backmark, however it is simply a logo. The top shows a pencil inscription “Mrs. Douglas.” That inscription is repeated on the bottom in a different hand.
These two CDVs are were not originally part of a pair; they have been married together by a modern collector. [cla][ph:L]
