CDV is a full seated view of a young boy identified only as C. A. Epes. The young boy looks to be about 6 or 7 years old and he is dressed in a light-colored shell jacket with a five-button front and matching trousers. He also wears a small bowtie.
Clarity is good but the contrast is a bit on the light side. Mount and paper are excellent.
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint but does have a period ink ID of “C. A. EPES.” There is also some collector information at bottom.
Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner.
A search of the 1860 census shows a child by the name of Charles Augustus Epes residing in Nottaway, Virginia. He was the son of the Nottaway County Clerk named Richard Epes who served as captain and assistant quartermaster of the 3rd Virginia Infantry. Captain Epes resigned on March 15, 1862.
Little Charles Augustus Epes was born in 1857 and married in Munfordville, Kentucky in 1881. He and his wife Mattie had 8 children. Charles died on December 20, 1940 and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone, Virginia. [ad] [ph:L]
