CDV WENDEROTH AND TAYLOR 1864 PHOTOGRAPH OF LINCOLN

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 297-16

This is (Ostendorf) O-95, a from-life view taken at the White House by Wenderoth and Taylor of Philadelphia. The photographers advertised that they took this image at the White House in 1864. The albumen is trimmed to an oval and attached to a plain card without borders, bearing the photographers’ backmark and a cancelled tax stamp. The image has good clarity and tone, showing Lincoln with a watch chain and winding key on his vest, with slight retouching by the photographers, most evident on his coat. There is a minor stain over the top of the albumen, affecting just its very tip.

Backmarked with a business logo of an artist’s palette and paintbrushes across which lies a ribbon reading “W. & E.” Below that “Wenderoth & Taylor 812-814 Chestnut Street Philadelphia.” Canceled two-cent stamp and two minor glue stains. See Ostendorf for variants and discussion. He suggests a date of March or April 1864 for the image. The tax stamp indicates this image was purchased by the original owner some time after August/September of that year.   [SR] [ph:L]
