Three-quarter standing studio view of a well-uniformed Colonel Miles. He wears a double-breasted frock with a braid galoons on his sleeves and three stars clearly visible on his collar. The image is clear with very good contrast. The mount remains in excellent condition. A period pencil identification is found along the bottom edge of the mount. Photographer's backmark, Anderson & Blessing, New Orleans.
Colonel William R. Miles became Colonel of Miles' Legion of Louisiana Infantry on May 15, 1862. He was captured at Port Hudson on July 9, 1863. Exchanged on October 11, 1864. He surrendered with Taylor's Confederate forces to General Canby.
From the collection of the late William Turner. [jet] [ph:L]
