CDV is of William E. Deacon sated at a cloth covered table on which rests his stovepipe hat. He wears a dark civilian jacket with light vest and trousers.
Contrast and clarity are good. Mount and paper are also good.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for BROWN & THOMPSON… NEW YORK. Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner who has identified the photo as that of William Deacon of the Confederate States Navy.
William E. Deacon was born in Louisiana.
He joined the Confederate Navy as an assistant paymaster on July 25, 1863 and served at Mobile, Alabama. He received a commission in the Provisional Confederate Navy on June 2, 1864 and was then posted to the Naval Station at Marion Court House, South Carolina. He did serve for an unknown period aboard the CSS PALMETTO STATE.
At wars end he was paroled in Richmond on April 15, 1865.
Deacon died in New Orleans in July of 1896.
