Image shows John Marshall Jones in the uniform of a United States Army lieutenant circa 1850’s. He is flanked on the left by his brother Frances William Jones and on the right by Thomas Russell Jones, both in dark civilian suits. All three subjects have tinted cheeks.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Paper and mount are also very good.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for JOHN M. SOUTH… GORDONSVILLE, VA.

John Marshall Jones was born Charlottesville, Virginia on July 26, 1820. He graduated from West Point in 1841, was commissioned an officer in the 7th Infantry and served on the frontier. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he resigned his commission to enter the Confederate service as a Captain of artillery. He was appointed a Colonel in the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862 and participated in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. In 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General and at the Battle of Gettysburg, he suffered a severe wound to his head that put him out of action. He returned to service in the early days of the Overland Campaign of 1864 and was killed in action at the Battle of Wilderness while attempting to rally his wavering men.

He is buried in Charlottesville’s Maplewood Cemetery.

From the collection of the late William A. Turner.  [ad][ph:L]
