CDV is a full standing view of Private Robert H. White of Company C, 35th Virginia Cavalry Battalion also known as “White’s Comanches” named after their commander Colonel Elijah V. White.
Private White is posed standing with his right arm leaning against the back of a chair while in his left hand he holds his slouch hat complete with cord. He wears a light-colored double-breasted frockcoat with matching trousers and knee high boots. At his waist is his sword belt, minus the sword, but with a holstered pistol on his right side.
Contrast and clarity are poor. Contrast is light and the clarity suffers from lack of discernable details. Mount is trimmed across the top and has light to moderate surface dirt around the edges. Paper is somewhat better. Bottom center of the mount has a strong perid ink signature of “YOURS, ROBT. H. WHITE.”
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint but it does have a nice period ink inscription that reads “VERY BAD. WAS STYLE” with each word underlined. Reverse also has collector information in pencil.
Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner.
Robert H. White was born on August 17, 1841.
He enlisted at Snickersville, Virginia on October 1, 1862 and was captured at Lovettsville, Virginia just 20 days later on the 21st. He was taken to Fort McHenry in Baltimore where he was paroled on the 25th of October.
After returning to his command, he was captured again, this time at Berryville on November 29, 1862. He was confined at Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. until March of 1863 when he was moved to City Point for exchange.
Records are incomplete but White does turn up as being present with his Company in March of 1864 but by war’s end White is in the 5th Army Corps Hospital at City Point suffering from diarrhea and was transferred on April 19, 1865 to the Provost Marshall.
Nothing is known about White’s post-war life other than that he died on August 3, 1874.
“White’s Comanches” served in 265 battles and skirmishes during the war serving under Fitz Lee and Rosser. Their actions include Beverly’s Ford, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Todd’s Tavern and Spotsylvania. [ad][ph:L]
