Waist-up view of Penn in frock coat. Colonel's rank (3 stars) are faintly visible on collar. The image is clear but slightly light in contrast. The mount remains in excellent condition. No photographer's backmark.
David Bradfute Penn (1835 - 1902), was born in Lynchburg, VA. He graduated Virginia Military Institute and the University of VA. His family moved from Lynchburg to Richmond and then to New Orleans. Penn was a lawyer and cotton merchant in New Orleans.
He was commissioned as Captain of Company D, 7th Louisiana Infantry on May 27, 1861. Promoted to Major on May 28, 1862, Lt. Colonel on June 12, 1862, and to Colonel on July 25, 1862. He was wounded in action at Cold Harbor on June 27, 1862 and at Antietam on September 17, 1862.
He was captured with most of two brigades, trapped on the north side of the Rappahannock River pontoon bridge on November 7, 1863. He was sent to Old Capitol Prison and then to Johnson's Island Prison. He was paroled in February 1865 and immediately reported for duty at Petersburg but there was no command available for him.
Col. Penn had been recommended for promotion to Brigadier General by Generals Early and T.J. Jackson as early as January 1863.
After the war he was elected Lt. Governor of Louisiana from 1872 to 1874. Penn was later appointed Adjutant General of Louisiana. He died in New Orleans and was buried at Live Oak Cemetery in Pass Christian, Mississippi.
From the collection of the late William Turner. [jet] [ph:L]
