This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's, double-breasted frock coat. The mount is slightly trimmed. Modern pencil notes on back. Photographer's backmark, J. Hobday, Portsmouth, Va.
Charles Crow was from Richmond and was a 23-year-old machinist when he enlisted as a Private on 4/20/1861 into the Purcell Battery of (4th) Virginia Light Artillery.
He was wounded on 6/26/1862 at Mechanicsville and again on 6/16/1864 at Riddle Shop, Virginia. He resigned for disability on 3/9/1865. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 4/1/1862 and to 2nd Lieutenant on 2/28/1863.
The Purcell Light Artillery, completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in April, 1861. The unit was assigned to R.L. Walker's and W.J. Pegram's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. It participated in campaigns from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, was involved in the operations against Petersburg and Richmond, and saw action around Appomattox. The battery reported 7 killed and 53 wounded during the Seven Days' Battles, and lost seven percent of the 89 engaged at Gettysburg. It was included in the surrender on April 9, 1865. Its captains were George M. Cayce, William J. Pegram, and R. Lindsay Walker.
This photo is from the William Turner collection. [jet] [ph:L]
