The ID on this image is in modern pencil on the reverse. The photo comes from the well-known collection of the late William A. Turner and was no doubt identified by Mr. Turner through research or, from an album page from which the image was removed.

CDV shows Joseph W. Howard form the chest up in a light-colored frock coat with the two bars of a 1st lieutenant on his collar.

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount is good but the paper does have some light surface dirt.

Reverse is blank but for the above mentioned ID.

Joseph W. Howard was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1841. He enlisted as a private in Company F, White’s 41st Battalion of Virginia Cavalry on September 21, 1863. He was elected to the rank of “Senior 2nd lieutenant” on October 1, 1863. In April of 1864 two more companies were added to the battalion and it became the 23rd Virginia Cavalry. Lieutenant Howard was commanding the Company by January 1864. He was paroled at Richmond on May 7, 1865.

It is believed that after the war he went into the drug business in Washington, D.C. and died there in July of 1894. He is buried there in Oak Hill Cemetery.  [ad] [ph:L]
