Carte de vista of Captain Norcom. Seated studio view in double-breasted frock with proper collar insignia. Image is clear with slightly light contrast. Corners of mount have been trimmed. Photographer's backmark, B. Moses, New Orleans. A 2-cent revenue stamp and pencil notes are on the back.
Norcom was born in North Carolina in 1833. He enlisted in May 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Company, Washington Artillery. Promoted to Captain on June 13, 1863. He was wounded Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, where he was in command of Company D, and took part in the cannonade prior to Longstreet’s Assault. Captain Norcom’s battery (Eshleman’s battalion) had but one Howitzer and two Napoleons. Both Napoleons were put out of action on July 3, one with a broken axle and the other being struck on the muzzle, which prevented it from being loaded. (Eshleman’s Official Report)
Norcom died on July 14, 1914 and is buried in Lafayette Cemetery Number 1 in New Orleans.
From the collection of the late William Turner. [jet] [PH:L]
