This is a carte de visite photo of Godwin in uniform. Chest-up view wearing double breasted frock; beard covers collar insignia. Image is clear with good contrast. Mount has been trimmed top and bottom. Photographer's backmark, C.R. Rees & Co., Richmond.
Godwin was listed as a Lieutenant in late 1861 and is attached to the Quartermaster Department and Provost Marshall at different times through the war, posted in Salisbury, NC and later in Richmond, VA. He is promoted to Captain on December 19, 1861. He is a Major by the summer of 1862.
