Waist-up view of Gordon in a double-breasted frockcoat with colonel’s collar insignia.

Clarity and contrast are excellent. Paper is very good but the mount has clipped corners.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for ROCKWELL & COWELL… PETERSBURG, VA. Bottom has “GORDON” in period ink as well as some collector information in pencil.

John Brown Gordon was born February 6, 1832 in Upson, Georgia. Gordon attended the University of Georgia but did not graduate. He studied law in Atlanta and passed the bar. In 1854 he married Rebecca Haralson whom he affectionately called “Fanny.”

On the outbreak of the Civil War Gordon was elected Captain of his Company. Gordon saw action at 1st Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign and Antietam where he was wounded several times. He was appointed Brigadier General on November 1, 1862. He commanded a Brigade in Early’s Division during the Gettysburg Campaign. Gordon fought at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania being promoted to major general on May 14, 1864. He served with Early in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and later at Petersburg where he led the attack on Fort Stedman. After the surrender at Appomattox, he commanded the official surrender ceremony.

After the war Gordon was elected to the Senate in 1873 and served till 1880. In 1886 he was elected Governor of Georgia and returned to the Senate where he served from 1891-1897. Gordon also had the distinction of being elected the first Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans in 1890.

In 1903 he published his memoirs “Reminiscences of the Civil War” after which he was engaged in a number of speaking tours. General Gordon died on January 9, 1904 and was buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.  [ad] [ph:L]
