Three-quarter standing view of Hawley in uniform with lieutenant’s shoulder straps. Clear image with good contrast. Mount has been trimmed. Period ink signature on back (trimmed). Photographer’s backmark, Moulthrop, New Haven, CT. A green 3-cent revenue stamp is also on the back.
From Avon, Connecticut, Hawley enlisted on 12/18/1861 as a Private on Company "H" 12th Connecticut Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on 9/3/1863 at New Orleans, LA. On 9/3/1863 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in company "C" 99th U.S.C.T. Infantry. He was discharged on 4/23/1866. [jet] [ph:L]
