The subject wears the dark double piped shell jacket peculiar to the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry with dark Sergeant’s chevrons on each sleeve. He also wears light trousers with a dark NCO stripe and knee-high boots. At his waist is his sword belt with a two piece tongue and wreath plate. With a loop it appears it may be a spread-winged eagle on the tongue but it is not distinct enough to tell. On his head is a dark wide brimmed slouch hat. The subject is posed leaning against a high backed dining room chair in front of a pastoral backdrop.
The image is clear with good contrast but it does have some condition issues. There is a crease across the center of the image approx. waist high on the subject. Mount corners are clipped and top is trimmed. There is scattered surface dirt throughout.
The reverse has a photographer’s mark for CHAS. PAXSON…. PHILADELPHIA. The surface of the reverse looks as if a child got at it with a pencil and scribbled on the back. One of the upper corners is also curled. [ad]
