By Matthew Brady-Backmark: "Brady's Album Gallery./ No. 436./ GENERAL STONEMAN AND STAFF, At His Headquarter Near Fair Oaks…". Images measures 4 x 2.75" and is mounted against a white card in a heavy gilt frame measuring 5.375 x 6.75, with contemporary velvet stand-backing. One of a mumber of images made by Brady of Stoneman and Staff in June 1862, all posed before the same tent with the same dog in the foreground. In this one Stoneman has shifted to a chair in the center of the grouping. He is surrounded by five junior officers, two seated alongside and three standing to the rear. The dog is barely in the picture on the lower right. Exceptional clarity with great detail of uniforms and shoulder straps. Frame VG. Overall VG plus plus.
A West Point trained veteran, George Stoneman had a very uneven Civil War career. He commanded a division during the 1862 Peninsula campaign, and a corps during the battle of Fredericksburg, but then was relieved of command of the cavalry corps in the aftermath of the disastrous "Stoneman's Raid" made in conjunction with the equally disastrous Battle of Chancellorsville. He restored his reputation somewhat with his performance in divisional command under Gen. Sherman during the closing months of the war. He remained in the regular army until 1871, then retired to California, where he served as Governor 1883-87. He died in Buffalo, NY, 5 Sept, 1894.
Magnificent CDV of Gen. George Stoneman and staff.
