This cdv image is actually a photograph of a photograph, as the edges of the original can be seen. Regardless, the image is a good one with the “CASTLE THUNDER” sign mounted on the wall. The ruled mount remains in fine, untrimmed condition. An interesting b/m is, “Sumner & Harris / UNION / GALLERY / GENL. BUTLER’S / H. Qrs. In the Field”. Also on the back, in period ink, the erroneous identification of “Libby Prison / Richmond / Va.”
Castle Thunder was located between 17th and 18th Street on the north side of E. Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia. It was a former tobacco warehouse, converted into a prison used by the Confederacy to house civilian prisoners, including captured spies, political prisoners and those charged with treason. A large number of its inmates were sentenced to death. After the Union forces captured Richmond in 1865, they used the prison for similar purposes.
A fire in 1879 destroyed the building in its entirety. [jet][ph:L]
