Seated studio view of three black women. One is smoking from a hookah/water pipe, one has an unidentified item in her hand, and the third holds a tea cup. All are well-dressed with jewelry, elaborate hair styles, and head scarves. Clear image with good contrast. Plain mount with no photographer’s backmark.
A modern pencil note on the back reads “smoking hashish”, but that is obviously impossible to prove.
Image is from the late William Turner collection. [jet] [ph:L]
