This is a 4.25” x 6.5” cabinet card photograph of Holmes in his Federal Major’s uniform. In this chest-up view, he is wearing a double-breasted officer’s frock with Major’s shoulder straps. The image and mount are clean and in fine condition. The photographer’s imprint is found on the front, bottom edge and on the back of the card: “Wm. F. Shorey, Baltimore, MD.”

Theophilus Hunter Holmes (November 13, 1804 – June 21, 1880) was an American soldier who served as a senior officer of the Confederate States Army and commanded infantry in the Eastern and Trans-Mississippi theaters during the Civil War. He had previously served with distinction as an officer of the United States Army in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. He was promoted to Major of the 8th U.S. Infantry in 1855. A friend and protégé of Confederate States President Jefferson Davis, he was appointed commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department but failed in his key task, which was to defend the Confederacy's hold on the Mississippi. After the war, he returned to North Carolina, where he spent the rest of his life as a farmer. Holmes died on June 21, 1880, in Fayettville and is buried there in MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery. [jet][ph:L]
