This is a post-Civil War copy of circa 1861 photo of Burke in Confederate uniform and mounted on a 4.25” x 5” (trimmed) cabinet card mount. The image shows Burke in a double-breasted frock coat with stars on the collar and galloon on the cuffs.
The mount has been trimmed on top and bottom edges, but the photographer’s imprint can still be seen on the lower edge, “Foster / Richmond, Va.” There is no backmark, but modern pen identifications are present.
Thomas Mundie Burke was born on April 20, 1829. He graduated in the V.M.I. Class of 1852. He was from Essex County, Virginia when he enlisted on May 21, 1861 as a Captain in Company “F” of the 55th Virginia Infantry. He was promoted to Major on June 24, 1862, then being wounded two days later at Mechanicsville (wounded in left arm, remained in field). Thomas Burke was then killed on June 6th (four days later) at Frayser's Farm, Virginia.
The image is clean and clear. From the William Turner collection. [jet][ph:L]
