Offered on our website as item #2020-414 was a photograph and some documents related to Samuel W. N. Feamster of the 14th Virginia Cavalry. This lot of documents pertain to his son, Claude Newman Feamster who rose to the rank of colonel in the US Army during the early 1900’s
The lot contains a bound 32 page typed history for the Feamster family prepared by Claude N. Feamster. It tells of the origin of the family name, when they came to the United States and gives details of all the important Feamsters in US history. It speaks a bit about Claude’s father and uncle’s service in the Civil War as well as Claude’s experience in the Army as well as Claude’s two sons in World War Two.
The group also contains two cabinet card photographs of buffalo grazing on the plains. It is obvious looking at the photos that the buffalo are in a fenced area. In the background of one view are two mounted men with an open plain extending for miles beyond the fence. The other view is probably facing 180 degrees in the opposite direction. The background shows the same fence as in the first image with the plains extending in the distance to faint hills in the far background. Both images meas. approx. 10.00 x 8.00 inches on their mounts. Both have damage to the mount edges by way of chips. One is missing the whole upper right corner but that being said the images themselves are in good shape.
Next is a lot of six portrait photographs of Claude N. Feamster in uniform. All are approx. 9.50 x 7.50 inches. Three date from about 1900 and are full standing views of Feamster in his dress whites, dress blues and field uniforms. The next three were taken during World War One. The first is full length showing Feamster in tunic, trousers, campaign hat and boots with spurs. The next two are waist up images. In one he wears his campaign hat and in the other he does not and is in more of a nonchalant pose. All three are marked on the reverse with “SUMMER 1918 CAMP MEADE.”
Next is a photo of the Feamster home with a horse grazing in front of it. There is nothing on the image stating where the house was located. Claude Feamster moved around a good bit during his Army service and later for his health. Mounted on a gray card that shows light surface dirt around the edges the image meas. approx. 6.50 x 5.50.
The last image is of two older men seated on a crude wood bench or plank in front of a large tree. Both wear civilian clothes. Image meas. approx. 8.50 x 5.50 and is in good condition but its mount has moderate surface dirt. The reverse identifies the men as “COUSIN WANDY AND UNCLE MILCH.” Off to one side is a pencil notation that reads “MRS. JOHN N. MENTZEE, BUST OF MAN ON RIGHT.”
Nice small group relating to the son of a Confederate Veteran. [ad]
