Image has good clarity and contrast.
Reverse has photographer’s mark for F. O. EVERETT…WORCESTER, MASS. Period pencil ID at top reads “C. N. ALLEN, Co K, 2nd N.H.”
Charles N. Allen was born in Lee, Massachusetts. He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 21, 1861 and was discharged on October 1, 1863.
He was appointed to the US Army Hospital Stewards on October 5, 1863 and was discharged at Fort Wood, NY on March 21, 1866.
After the war Allen resided in Worcester, Massachusetts where he was an active member of the George H. Ward Post #10 of the GAR.
He died in Worcester on October 19, 1897.
While Allen was with the 2nd the regiment saw action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. [ad][ph:L]
