Lyman A. Dickey was born October 20, 1840 in Southbridge, Vermont. He was living in Manchester, New Hampshire when he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 22, 1861. He was wounded at 2nd Bull Run on August 29, 1862, promoted Corporal January 1, 1863 and Sergeant January 1, 1864. He was mustered out on June 21, 1864.
Of his wounding at 2nd Bull Run the regimental history says;
“JUST AS SOON AS HE CAME UPON THE RAILROAD BANK, A REBEL, SEATED ON THE GROUND, FIRED UP AT HIM, THE BALL TRAVERSING ALMOST THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF HIS FOREARM. IT WILL ALWAYS BE AN OPEN QUESTION WHETHER THAT FELLOW WAS KICKED OR STABBED TO DEATH, AS DICKEY’S HEELS AND BAYONET LANDED ON HIM AT THE SAME MOMENT.”
After the war Dickey lived in Wilson’s Crossing, New Hampshire.
Lyman A. Dickey died on December 8, 1915 in Derry. He was buried in Manchester, New Hampshire in Stowell, Cemetery.
The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [ad][ph:L]
