Image shows Daniel W. Gould of Company G. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and dark tie. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and Company.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount has some minor edge wear.

Reverse is totally blank.

Daniel Walton Gould was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire on August 10, 1838. He enlisted as a Private in Company G, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 15, 1861.

Gould was wounded severely in the left arm and leg during the fighting at Williamsburg on May 5, 1862. His arm was amputated but he carried the bullet in his leg for the rest of his life. Gould was discharged for disability at New York City on November 28, 1862.

After the war Gould returned to Peterborough where he was town clerk. From 1872 -1873 he was a member of the New Hampshire Legislature and in 1874 he accepted a position as clerk in the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. where he remained until 1876 when he moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts. He served as Inspector in the Boston Customs House until 1895 and as commander-in-chief of the Union Veterans Union and a founding member of the Aaron Stevens Post #6 of the GAR.

Gould died in Marlborough, Massachusetts on June 16, 1916 and is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in his hometown of Peterborough, New Hampshire.

The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  [ad][ph:L]
