Very nice cabinet card photo of Company B, 1st Pennsylvania Infantry taken at Mt. Gretna in May of 1898.
Image shows approx. 60 members of the Company posed in a group in front of their tents. NCO’s can be seen standing at either side while the Company Commander sits at center. Almost all the men wear dark kepis with a Pennsylvania Keystone at center of the crown with crossed rifles on the front with a Company letter “B” below the rifles and a number “1” on top. They also wear dark 5-button sack coats and light trousers.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper is good but the white mount shows light surface dirt from age. No photographer’s imprint is visible.
Reverse has a period ink inscription telling when and where the photo was taken and lists the names of all the men in the Company.
Image is housed in the original wood frame that meas. approx. 10.25 x 8.25 inches and has glass on both sides allowing one to read the inscription on the reverse.
The 1st Pennsylvania was mustered into Government service at Mt. Gretna on May 10 and 11, 1898. It was sent to Chickamauga Park where it was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 1st Corps. The regiment never left the United States and was mustered out at Philadelphia on October 26, 1898. [ad] [ph:L]
