Image looks to be an 1890’s copy of a wartime photograph. Samuel Hutton is shown wearing a visor cap or mechanics hat with a checked ribbon around the base of the crown. He also wears a dark civilian jacket with a black felt collar, a checkered vest and white shirt. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption that reads “DRUMMER SAMUEL HUTTON, CO. E.”

Image has very good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good.

Reverse has no photographer’s mark and a period ink notation that reads “NO. 1 SAMUEL HUTTON, BALTIMORE M.D. CO. E, 2ND N.H.V. DRUMMER BOY.” Above this is another faint notation in ink.

Samuel Hutton was born in Manchester, England. He was 18 years old when he enlisted as a musician in the band of the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry at Philadelphia on September 17, 1861. He was captured at White Oak Swamp on June 30, 1862 and paroled on August 3, 1862. He became a reenlisted veteran on January 1, 1864 and at some point was transferred to Company D. He was mustered out at City Point, Virginia on December 19, 1865.

Nothing is known of his post-war life other than he married and that his wife filed for a widow’s pension in the state of Maryland in 1892.

The 2nd New Hampshire was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [ad]
